BY ROBERT KAMUKAMA

KAMPALA, Uganda |SHIFTMEDIA| TThere was jubilation in Kawempe as Jjuma Wasswa Ssekyanzi has declared the winner of the NRM Mayoral flag bearer for Kawempe Division.

Wasswa got 8745 votes, while his opponents Ronald Lugandakulya and Johnson Sekandi got 3464 and 1495 respectively.

Jane Kabahweza, the NRM Kawempe electoral district returning officer declared Wasswa as the winner at the event held at Makerere University Primary School on Monday.

Wasswa was carried high by his supporters in celebration. Another winner announced was Lillian Namugenyi who got 768 votes, while her contender Juliet Nakasujja got 175 votes. The two were contesting to hold the NRM flag for LC 3 Woman Councilor Kawempe 2.

Nakasujja and her supporters say the election in Kawempe 2 did not take place due to chaos and one of the polling officers identified as Rose Wamala, the supervisor NRM Electoral Commission in Kawempe North A had told them that the election would be conducted tomorrow Tuesday.

They were however surprised to hear Namugenyi being declared the winner. A scuffle emerged with supporters of Nakasujja attacking the returning officer Wamala. They accused her of taking a bribe of Shillings 500,000 shillings from them and later going against the deal for re-election tomorrow.
One of Nakasujja’s supporters Abbey Mukwaya told Uganda Radio Network – URN that there was no election in Kawempe 2 and wondered where the results that were announced came from. One of the electoral officials also confirmed that there was no election at a polling station they were manning although declaration forms emerged with results.

The vote for Makerere Muluka 1 Woman Councilor was also problematic. Yudaya Nakulabye accused her opponent only identified as Rachael of cheating the election. It took over two hours as Nakulabye and her opponent discussed results at the tally centre.
