TUNIS, Tunisia- SHIFTMEDIA- Tunisian Health Minister Faouzi Mehdi has been sacked amidst the Covid 19 cases in the desert nation.

Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi said on Tuesday he had sacked the Health Minister for failing to contain the virus that has so far left 17,000 dead.

Tunisia with a population of 12 million is among the continent’s nations with widespread Covid 19 infections and deaths. The others are South Africa and Algeria.

As the pandemic gets scaled up, just about  8% of the country’s population (900,000) have so far been vaccinated amidst limited vaccines.

According to the Prime Minister’s office, the Social Affairs Minister Mohammed Trabelsi will be the caretaker for the time being

As Tunisia celebrated Eid al- Adha, there was a stampede in some 29 vaccination centers that was set up for the citizens.

The Tunisian government has been rocked with widespread cabinet resignation and massive disagreements between parliament and the executive.

The country’s hospitals have faced oxygen shortages along with a lack of staff and ICU beds, pushing countries from Gulf states to former colonial power France and even cash-strapped Mauritania to send medical aid.

On Sunday, Tunisia reported 117 new coronavirus deaths and 2,520 new cases, bringing the total recorded cases to more than half a million.

In some hospitals, the bodies of Covid victims have been left lying in rooms next to other patients for up to 24 hours because there was not enough staff to organize their transfer to overstretched mortuaries.

The health ministry’s Facebook page said special field hospitals set up in recent months are no longer enough.
