Local Artists And Promoters Clash Over Shs8b Covid 19 Stimulus Cash

By SMN Reporter

KAMPALA-SHIFTMEDIA- For over a year the life for musicians has been rather rough. After the lockdown was slapped on all entertainments many local artists went low.

Just a few ‘hardliners’ managed to remain amidst the storm as Covid 19 wreaked havoc to the industry.

The top Ugandan pop musicians released a raft of songs and music videos to educate and alert the public about COVID-19.

Notable among them was Bobi Wine and Nubian Li’s Corona Virus Alert and Bebe Cool’s Corona Distance. But there’s also the likes of Pastor Frank Kyeyune’s Katonda Yekka ku Corona (God Only On Corona), Dickens Ahabwe’s Coronavirus in Uganda and Corona by Ykee Benda, King Saha, Joanita Kawalya, B2C, Fefe Busu Dre Cali and Myci Ou.

After they engaged the Presidents Brother Gen Caleb Akandwanano, aka Salim Saleh, and ardent music lover, President Museveni promised a hefty package.

We learnt that more than shs8b was released to support the musicians, but this stimulus package is now splitting the artists.

The music promoters some who said they lost billions in planned concerts before the lockdown have since been trying to get a bailout from the government in form of a stimulus fund.

But though their efforts have paid off, some corrupt leaders decided to have ghost artists among those set to benefit.

According to promoter Balaam Barugahara, the fund will not be shared for the time being because of the ghost promoters on the list.

The fishy promoters who compiled the list have failed to explain some names and who those artists are prompting a stalemate.
