Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference Kicks off amidst tight security

Munyonyo, Uganda: The 64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference kicked off at the lake side Speke Resort Munyonyo amidst tight security. The conference opened with the closed meetings of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) regional secretaries.

Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga said that overt and covert security personnel plus a standby team with specialists in encountering various security situations, had been deployed to ensure maximum security.

Specialist teams, according to Enanga, is comprised of Special Forces Command –SFC, Joint Ant-Terrorism Task Force (JATT), Counter-Terrorism (CT), Crime Intelligence (CI), UPDF and UPF marine teams.

The conference will, among others discuss the importance of monitoring for new parliamentarians and the promotion of women to leadership positions and senior portfolios, as part of the segment for the Women Parliamentary delegates.

The theme for the conference that ends on September 29, 2019, and attended by over 1,000 delegates is :”Adaption, engagement and evolution of Parliament’s in a rapidly changing Commonwealth’.

The delegates that include over 20 Speakers and their deputies are from former colonies and territories of Britain that include: Fiji, The Gambia, Cameroon, Kenya, Canada, Jamaica, Sri Lanka, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Malaysia, Bermuda, Ghana, Guyana, Ghana, Tanzania, New Zealand, Australia, Cameroon, India,  Wales, Falkland Islands, Scotland, and Pakistani among others.
